Geographical location of Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is located in the Northeast of Vietnam, 165km from Hanoi capital, in Quang Ninh province. This is the sea area defined in coordinates from 106 ° 56 ‘to 107 ° 37’ East longitude and 20 ° 43 ‘to 21 ° 09’ North latitude with an area of ​​1,553 km² including 1969 islands, of which 90 % is limestone island. The North and Northwest of Ha Long Bay extends from Quang Yen town, through Ha Long city, Cam Pha city, to the end of the sea and islands of Van Don district. The South East and the South borders the West Bank of the Gulf of Tonkin. The Southwest borders Cat Ba island (Hai Phong). Ha Long Bay includes Bai Tu Long Bay which has a similar value with Ha Long Bay in terms of landscape, geology, geomorphology, biodiversity and historical culture.

Ha Long Bay stands out with its beautiful stone island system and caves. The island has two types of limestone islands and shale islands, concentrated in two main areas: the southeastern area of ​​Bai Tu Long bay and the southwestern area of ​​Ha Long bay. This is the oldest image of the terrain with geological tectonic age from 250 to 280 million years, which is the result of the process of lifting and lowering many times from the continent to the sea valley. The weathering process has created a unique Ha Long in the world.

There are hundreds of rocky islands with different shapes, including Dau Ngu Island, Dragon Islet, La Vong Islet, Canh Buom Islet, Trong Mai Islet, and Lu Huong Islet. Hiding in the heart of these rocky islands are beautiful caves associated with many miraculous legends, for example, Thien Cung cave, Dau Go cave, Sung Sot cave, Trinh Nu cave, Tam Cung cave, etc. These are definitely the castles of the creation in the world. Since ancient times, Ha Long has been called as  “a wonder of the land built in the midst of the sky”. by the great national poet in Vietnam- Nguyen Trai.

Ha Long Bay has a tropical climate, dividing into 2 main seasons and 2 transitional seasons. Winter lasts from November to March. Summer lasts from May to September. Spring in April and autumn in October have a temperate climate. Summer has an average temperature of 26 ° C – 27 ° C. Winter has an average temperature of 15 ° C – 20 ° C. Average annual temperature is 18 ° C – 19 ° C.

Ha Long Bay has an average annual rainfall from 2,000mm – 2,200mm. The salinity of seawater is divided into 2 corresponding seasons: rainy season reaches 21 – 22, the dry season reaches 32 – 33. The topography of the bay bottom is relatively flat, with an average depth of 5 – 10m, and a number of channels with depths from 15 – 29m such as: Cua Luc low-lying area with 20m deep, Card Vang canal with 22 – 27m deep and other creeks have an average depth of 9 – 10m.
