Khoun Kong Leng Lake is one of Laos’s most outstanding natural destinations, drawing visitors with its clear turquoise water, majestic limestone scenery, and peaceful setting amid the mountains and forests of Khammouane. It’s an ideal spot for anyone wanting to reconnect with untouched nature and unwind amid a tranquil landscape.

1. About Khoun Kong Leng Lake, Laos

Locally known as Evening Gong Lake, Khoun Kong Leng is a stunning limestone lake located within the Phu Hin Bun National Protected Area in Khammouane Province, Laos. The lake formed from a natural sinkhole fed by underground water flowing through limestone layers, giving it remarkably clear water with a distinctive turquoise-green hue.

While the lake’s actual depth has not been precisely measured, the site remains famous for its untouched beauty and peaceful scenery amid the towering limestone mountains. The name Khoun Kong Leng is also tied to a local legend about the sound of a gong ringing out in the evening, adding an air of mystery that appeals to nature-loving explorers.

The lake’s water stays cool year-round thanks to its natural underground springs, offering a refreshing escape from Laos’s hot weather. To protect the ecosystem, visitors are not allowed to swim directly in the lake itself and may only enjoy the water in the stream that flows out from it, under local guidance.

Around the lake, visitors can also enjoy relaxing activities such as forest walks, rope swinging, or resting at small huts that sell food and drinks. The area has retained its pristine character and hasn’t been heavily commercialized for tourism, making it a favorite among nature lovers and those seeking a quiet space—especially on weekends, when locals often come to picnic and grill food by the stream.

2. The legend of Khoun Kong Leng Lake

According to local belief, Khoun Kong Leng Lake is celebrated not only for its natural beauty but also for the many mystical stories passed down through generations. Many people believe the lake holds a special energy, and that on full-moon nights, a bell-like sound can sometimes be heard echoing across the still water.

These legends have given the lake its own spiritual character and made it an important part of the local culture in the Khammouane region.

As tourism in Laos continues to grow, Khoun Kong Leng Lake has gradually become more widely known among travelers. Even so, local authorities remain focused on preserving its natural beauty and protecting the ecosystem within the Phu Hin Bun National Protected Area.

3. Getting to Khoun Kong Leng Lake

Khoun Kong Leng Lake lies about 50 kilometers northeast of Thakhek city in Khammouane Province, Laos, and is mainly reached by road. From central Thakhek, travelers head north along National Route 13, then turn onto a smaller road leading to the Ban Na Kheu area.

This route passes through hills, villages, and quite scenic countryside, capturing the peaceful character typical of rural Laos. In recent years, many stretches of the road have been paved, making travel more convenient than before, though some sections can still be slippery and rough during the rainy season.

For those who prefer independent exploration, many travelers rent a motorbike in Thakhek for around 90,000 Lao kip per day. This is also a familiar part of the well-known Thakhek Loop route. However, since the journey includes several winding, hilly stretches, this option suits experienced long-distance riders better.

Besides motorbikes, visitors can also hire tuk-tuks, minivans, or join local tours for a more comfortable and safer way to get around.

For travelers starting from Vientiane, the trip to Thakhek usually takes around 6–9 hours by bus, or less by private car. After reaching Thakhek, it takes about another hour to get to Khoun Kong Leng Lake. Many visitors combine this trip with a visit to Kong Lor Cave and other well-known natural attractions in Khammouane.

Local buses on National Route 13 can also stop near the turnoff to the lake, though the service isn’t very convenient, so most travelers still prefer renting private transport or joining a tour for a more flexible itinerary.

4. When is the best time to visit the lake?

Based on travel experience at Khoun Kong Leng Lake in Laos, the best time to visit is during the dry season, from around November to March. The weather is cooler then, the roads are dry, and getting to the lake is much easier.

The clear water and surrounding limestone scenery look especially beautiful on mild, sunny days, making it a great time for sightseeing, photography, and relaxing in nature. This is also the period most travelers choose for exploring the Khammouane region of Laos.

During the rainy season, from May to October, the road to the lake can become slippery and harder to navigate due to its many winding, hilly stretches. Heavy rain at certain times can also bring a risk of flooding or minor flash floods, so visitors need to drive carefully, especially those traveling by motorbike.

During this season, many people choose to travel with a local guide for extra safety. Visitors are also encouraged to help protect the environment and avoid littering, to help preserve the untouched natural beauty of Khoun Kong Leng Lake.

5. Entrance fees and facilities

Visitors to Khoun Kong Leng Lake need to buy an entrance ticket at a fairly low price, around 5,000 Lao kip per person. Before taking part in any water activities, visitors usually need to ask permission from the residents of Ban Na Kheu village to ensure compliance with local environmental protection rules.

To help preserve the lake’s natural ecosystem, visitors are not permitted to swim directly in the main lake and may only enjoy the water in the stream flowing out near the wooden bridge outside. Fishing is also completely prohibited to help preserve the site’s untouched beauty.

The lake is open daily and is mainly suited to day trips, since the surrounding area has no accommodation—visitors typically stay at guesthouses in Thakhek before or after their trip. As of 2024, the lake reopened after a period of renovation and continues to draw nature lovers.

Although tourism here is not yet highly developed, the lake area does offer some basic amenities for visitors. Shaded spots around the lake are well suited for resting or laying out a mat for a picnic amid nature. A few small stalls run by local residents also sell snacks, drinks, and simple dishes for visitors.

That said, the site remains fairly rustic, so services are limited—there are no clearly designated restrooms, in particular. For this reason, many visitors bring their own drinking water, tissues, and other essentials before visiting Khoun Kong Leng Lake.
