From childhood memories of sitting beside a loom, Veomanee Douangdala has woven a journey that carries Laos’ traditional culture from Luang Prabang to the world — where heritage is not only preserved, but also lives alongside the present and connects with the future.

1. Tourism – A Bridge Between Traditional Crafts and the Future

“I sold my first scarf when I was just 8 years old. It was only at a local market, and I earned just 20 kip, but I still remember the feeling: I was both nervous and proud,” Veomanee Douangdala shared.

That sense of pride marked the beginning of her lifelong connection with weaving, taking her from a young girl growing up in a family of weavers in Luang Prabang to the co-founder of Ock Pop Tok — a center where Lao culture is preserved and shared through both the hands and hearts of local communities.

She shared this story at the 2025 Mekong Tourism Forum, an event held just a few days ago, offering a vivid example of how tourism can help sustain cultural values that are gradually disappearing.

Ock Pop Tok, the center co-founded by Veomanee, is more than just a weaving center. It is a place where ancient patterns are retold through a contemporary language. Located along the Mekong River within an open craft village setting, the center brings together artisans from different ethnic minority communities across Laos. Each artisan carries their own weaving techniques, patterns, colors, and stories.

Here, visitors do not simply purchase handicrafts; they immerse themselves in the world of traditional craftsmanship. They can touch silk threads with their own hands, try spinning silk using a spinning wheel, listen to artisans explain the origins of a particular pattern, or learn how indigo dye is made from plant leaves after days of soaking and fermentation.

Ock Pop Tok offers a range of in-depth craft experiences for visitors who want to learn more about traditional weaving. They can try dyeing fabric using areca nut husks, almond leaves, gardenia fruits, and other natural materials; learn how to tie threads, set up a loom, and weave their own fabric. They can then take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir, created by their own hands as part of their cultural discovery experience.

“We want visitors to take home not just a souvenir, but a memory connected to Lao culture,” Veomanee said. Here, heritage is not kept behind glass or reduced to simulated activities. Instead, it comes alive in the smiles of artisans, the earthy scent of natural dyes, the patience shown in every movement, and the amazed expressions of those sitting beside a loom for the first time.

In addition to its hands-on experiences, Ock Pop Tok also features a space showcasing contemporary handicrafts, a café using locally sourced ingredients, and guided tours offered in several languages. The center also organizes talks and discussions on weaving techniques, the role of women in craft communities, and how traditional crafts are changing in the digital age.

What makes this model distinctive is not simply the presentation of culture, but the way visitors are invited to step inside, interact, and experience it — not only through their eyes, but also through their hands, their sense of smell, and their entire experience. In this way, threads do more than connect pieces of fabric — they connect artisans with those who appreciate their work, tradition with the present, and heritage with the future.

2. When the Younger Generation Retells Heritage in Its Own Language

For Veomanee, tourism is not merely an economic sector; it is also an opportunity to preserve things that might otherwise gradually disappear. She shared: “In the past, not everyone was interested in weaving. But today, younger generations are gradually becoming proud of the craft when they see their mothers and grandmothers appearing on television, when their handicrafts are displayed at renowned fairs around the world, and when international visitors appreciate each piece of fabric as a work of art.”

Ock Pop Tok creates opportunities for young artisans to learn, exchange ideas, and represent their communities at regional fairs and cultural events. Veomanee herself has brought Lao textiles to the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, USA — not simply to promote a brand, but to tell the story of Lao women who are preserving their craft with all their heart.

“We want them to be more than just people who make products. We want them to be the people who preserve and retell the cultural stories of their communities,” she said.

Today, a growing number of young Lao people have begun designing clothing, accessories, and contemporary handicrafts inspired by traditional patterns. According to Veomanee, the key is to help them preserve the spirit of tradition while giving them the flexibility to creatively reinterpret its forms, so that each product retains its cultural identity while remaining relevant to modern life.

For Veomanee, heritage is not something simply meant to be admired; it is something that must be lived. In a Luang Prabang that is changing day by day, with its historic quarter becoming increasingly crowded, its streets filled with cluttered signs and its restaurants and shops growing noisier, she still believes that when tourism is built on listening and respect, with local communities at its center, it can become the most sustainable companion of cultural heritage.
