Expedition up the Mekong - 14 days (40 travellers)

Begin in cosmopolitan Saigon in Vietnam, close to where the mighty Mekong emerges into the South China Sea. Follow the river through its lush delta to the mountains of Northern Laos. Discover the geography, anthropology and the history of the colonial explorers of Indochina. Stop at all the main points of interest en route including the spectacular temples of Angkor and the sleepy World Heritage listed town of Luang Prabang in Laos.

DAYS 1-2: SAIGON

Arrive in Saigon and transfer to your hotel. Over the next couple of days explore Saigon and surrounds including a walking tour of historic sites, a visit to an atmospheric temple and buzzing wholesale market in Chinatown and a half-day tour to nearby Cu Chi Tunnels, which gives a fascinating insight into the Vietnam conflict. Enjoy some free time to explore Saigon's markets and shops and take advantage of the city's thriving restaurant and bar scene.

DAYS 3-4: MEKONG DELTA

The Mekong Delta is a beautiful, fertile region and home to a vast network of rivers and streams, islands and orchards, rice paddies and fish farms and, of course, the famous floating markets. After arriving by bus from Saigon, most explorations are by boat to get the most of this interesting region.

DAYS 5-8: CAMBODIA

From deep in the Mekong Delta, take a boat up the Mekong to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. After taking some time to explore the sights of this friendly city, including the Royal Palace and Museum, continue by boat to the temples of Angkor. Take a couple of days to explore the magnificent temples including the Bayon, jungle-covered Ta Prohm and Angkor Wat.

DAYS 9-11: LUANG PRABANG

Fly to Laos and soak up the unique and special atmosphere of Luang Prabang. Gain an insight into the local culture on visits to some of the many monasteries, where you'll have a chance to learn more about Buddhism when you chat with the local monks. Enjoy a fun Lao cooking class and visit beautiful Kuang Si Falls. Rise early to witness the ancient ritual of local monks collecting alms at dawn, and soak up the town’s relaxed atmosphere with a game of petanque.

DAYS 12-14: MEKONG BOAT

Your final boat journey awaits, as you travel for two days on the mighty Mekong towards Thailand. See the Pak Ou Caves, home to hundreds of Buddha effigies and visit towns en route that are home to some of Laos' interesting ethnic minorities. The scenery along this part of the Mekong is very different to the Delta, with the winding river flanked by tree-covered mountains. It's difficult to imagine anywhere more peaceful! After arriving at the Thai border, head to Chiang Rai in Thailand's Golden Triangle. From here continue your stay in Thailand or transfer to Bangkok for your journey home.
